Jhon,

Since you make no mention of where in the world you are and because I want to remain neutral, I will suggest the following.

You can contact some of the exhibitor advertising on this site or you can do a web search for organisation offering TOFD and Phased Array training. I know there are some really good ones out there, it all depend what you are looking for.

One thing to keep in mind, is to get your training with an establishment that is recognised and where you would also have the possibility of obtaining a certification like PCN, EN473 or other. These courses are expensives as it is. You want to make sure you get the most for your buck.

Good Luck

Jhon:

Alternatively, you could log onto the Olympus web site, look under the Training Academy, and read the course outlines. Then you could e-mail any training company that suited you.
http://www.olympus-ims.com/en/training-academy/

Other manufacturers also have training organizations.

I have had a look at the sites you kindly pointed out. There good but what i really need is a copy of the notes from any of the training schools and the type of questions they will ask during the exam, can anyone help.

Jock:
People generally pay a fair bit for their training I suspect that just handing over course notes and questions is not in anyone's best interest.
It is not clear from your posting what your motive is for these notes and questions.
If it is information about the curricula so you can decide on the course to take there are two sources for the course requirements (and these also include example questions) then go to either of the only third party certification centres for these options
For CSWIP enquiries go to http://www.cswip.com/contact/index.jsp
For BINDT http://www.bindt.org/downloads/PSL49.pdf.
If it is for a genuine source of reference information there are 2 books you should purchase; the TOFD (I assume you meant TOFD instead of TOFT) book by Charlesworth and Temple and the Intro to Phased-Array UT by RD Tech

Along the same idea, one thing I'm finding as PAUT and TOFD are getting more popular. These "back alley" courses, pretend experience and "certification" that are springing all over. So people wants to get the money, but are unwilling to pay their dues.

Gentlemen, if we want to be taken seriously, we have to behave as such, so talk the talk and walk the walk. Remember you don't have a second chance to make a first impression or as some technicians would say: "Budweiser rules 73; Go big or go home".

Ed and Michel, why is it a problem for the contents to be known? People still have to pass the exams after they learn everything on a manditory course that they have paid to attend!

I would like a copy of the notes as i'm going to do the course at Lavenders this summer but i've not booked it as its so expencive and i would really like some backgroud reading before i go to make sure i pass the exams.

I've seen notes for UT,RT,ECI,MPI,DPI for sale on ebay before, so why should TOFD or PAUT or even LRUT be any different.

I sence there is a touch of the old prima Donna's here and some folk should remember what it's like trying to get ahead in life rather that protecting there own best interests.

If you can't agree with this i think this thread has run it's course and thank you for some of your more positive replies.

Jhon,

You shouldn't take offence but the comments Ed and I made. They were not meant to exclude anyone from getting ahead in this field. If it was the case, we wouldn't spend as much time on this site as we do providing free advice to whomever seeked it. (Remember knowledge is power). You can trust me on that one.

You're saying that you will be going to Lavender? In that case, take the advice Ed and I gave you: read the Olympus Introduction to Phased Array Ultrasonic. It is the reference manual for the PAUT course. As for the course note for this; well it deals with how to set up your focal laws to do your inspection. So to study those notes prior to your course would be useless because you have to be hands on since the focal laws are directly related to the part you will be inspecting. I for one is in the know about Lavender because this is where I did my course in October 09 and unlike some other chaps, I paid the course out of my pocket unlike some other guys and I live in Canada (not that I want to use this as an excuse). So I know how expensive it is.

I've been involved in NDT since 1989 and as I said earlier, my concern is to see people trying to take short cuts. I'm not saying you are one of those. I don't know you and will give you the benifice of the doubt, but I've been around the block a few times and know people who operate in this fashion. It is done in Canada and I know it is done all around the world. This was the point I was trying to bring forth.

I'm not the best technician in the world. I know many people who are more knowledgeable and more talented than I am, but I do take pride in giving and trying my best when I do a job. For this reason, I do get a little upset when people are not on the up and up.

As for the notes themselves, they have been written by the instructors who teaches these course and should be treated in the same fashion as film, music and other books i.e. royalties paid to their author because this is how hey make their living.

I hope you understand.

Michel, Ed and Michael willingly gave you good, helpful information and you end up with a gratuitous rant about prima donnas. In life terms, your money might be more wisely invested on a "people skills" course rather than on technical books or courses.

Good luck

Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.

oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
