SS Overlay (variable ferrit) thickness.

In the as welded condition from a MIG process. Alloy 309L WITH Variable ferrite FN 1.5 to 11. The bead is not smooth due to downhill welding. The initial SS thickness applied is 0.130" to 0.190" on SA516-70 carbon base (1"). The vessel dia is 18' and the overlaid length is 40'.
If a NDT technique was developed that could measure the thickness of the overlay from the as welded side, would this instrument find wide use for vessel/tube overlays measurements??or there is not much interest???

Would the research cost be worth it???

Thanks for any help
