radiography

I have a 42" pipeline which is full of coke which we are intending to drill thru to open up the line. It has been proposed to radiography thru the line to determine the position of the drill bit and therby make corrections in position. Is this possible. Would a cobalt source be able to penetrate the material. What is the approx. density of the material. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
