Periodical Inspection of Industrial Tanks

Is anyone aware of "good engineering practice" or straight standard
requirements for periodical inspection of HNO3 containing tanks in the
chemical industry and what are the NDT methods used.

Dear Dr. Ornath,

I am assuming that these HN03 tanks are under Atmospheric Pressure and not Pressure Vessels. Here in the U.S. the API-STANDARD 653 is commonly used as a guideline for Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Reconstruction of Above Ground Atmospheric Pressure Tanks.

Depending upon many factors such as product, age, size and location determines the required inspection frequencies. Over the last five years most of the States have required inspections to be performed with frequencies no further apart than five years.

Common NDT methods used in Above Ground Storage Tank Inspections are:
1) Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) or Ultrasonic (UT) scanners to determine corrosion activity on the bottom side of the floor plates
2) Eddy Current (ET) and/or Vacuum Box to inspect the lap welds on the floor plates
3) Ultrasonics (UT) to take several spot thickness readings of the Shell and Roof (floating or fixed). This can be performed with a automated process or manual technique.

Re: Periodical Inspection of Industrial Tanks ional Inspections we commonly include in a scope of work:

1) B-Scan ultrasonic scan of the 100mm tank periphery where access to magnetic flux leakage floor scanners are restricted.
2) Tank shell settlement survey for calculation of planar and differential settlement
3) Ultrasonic crawler runs at (8) compass points to inspect the tank shell sidewalls with a minimum of (5) readings per strake.
4) Measurement internal edge punching
5) Bottom strake B-scanning if a water bottom is suspected.
6) Visual Inspection is by a qualified inspector is very important as the majority of API-653 is visual checks

Normal practice is to perform an online inspection followed by an offline inspection when the tank is empty and clean for maintenance.

Mr. Ornath,

Mssrs. Roberts and Trinidad are correct. I do have an
important note to add, if the tank is constructed of
austenitic SS, such as 304 or 316 ss, you may want to consider
additional inspection for external Cl stress corrosion cracking,
if you suspect it at all. Look at typical places
where salts can collect and concentrate, like at the bottom
head to sidewall lip, etc. I assume the vessel is not
insulated. One can use dye penetrant testing in select locations.

A non-magnetic material will require some additional thoughts
on inspection methods.
