Help Wanted: NDT for steel corrosion inside Concrete

Hello, Everyone!

Is there a NDT technique that can detect the steel corrosion under a concrete layer?
There is a steel plate underneath a concrete layer.
The thickness of the concrete is uniform (around 1 inch).
The thickness of the steel plate is about half an inch.
The potentail problem may be corrosion pots on the steel plate or even through holes.
It is only available to scan from the surface of the concrete.

Any suggestion is welcome.

You can try to use ultrasonic testing it's thickness if ultrasoinc can penetrate through them. Or you can phone us to discuss if you live in china too.

pndt supply a pulsed eddy current system known as INCOTEST that would measure through up to approx 200mm of concrete to measure the carbon steel plate below.

Dear Everyone:

Acoustic emission(AE) is an ideal method to detect corrosion of steel inside concrete. Elastic waves (AE) is produced by corrosion of steels and can be detected by AE sensors attached on the concrete surface. Another mechansim that produces larger signals is local micro cracking that takes place along the interface between the steel and the concrete. Since the volume increses remakabley (sometimes 700 percen) in the corrosion processes (formation of oxicides on the steel surface), the concrete can be easily cracked and produces many elastic(AE) signals. These signals can be de detected at a distance of 2-5 meter with an appropriate AE sensor.

Dear Mr Weihua Mao,

RTD-INCOTEST is the inspection system you are looking for.
This inspection technique is based on Pulsed Eddy Current and it is especially designed for corrosion detection in carbon and low alloy steel plates underneath insulation such as fireproofing (Ex sphere tanks supports “leg” and vessels skirts) without any insulation removal.
