UT on polymers

I would like to know if UT is possible on polymers, spesifically test on PP or EPR. If it is, what are the features on such testing. What information could I get from the test?

Thank you in advance.

Most of the activity in the field of ultrasonic testing of polymers involves thickness gaging of molded and extruded products. In the case of extruded tubes and pipes, thickness gaging is often performed in an in-process or on-line mode. In the case of more complex molded parts, it is usually done as an off-line quality control check. It is generally possible to locate unwanted bubbles or voids in polymers, and again this is sometimes done in-process, such as in critical applications like high voltage cable jackets. Finally (and much less commonly implemented), it is possible to analyze material properties of polymers by measuring changes in sound velocity and/or attenuation.

You can find further details on theory and practice in the NDT Applications section of my company's web site at

Re: UT on polymers
NDE in general is applied to Polymers of many varieties.
High and low temperture applications, cure rates, degree of cross-linking, etc.
A couple of references might help illustrate the extent of this aplication.

Also, contact Dr. N.D.Patel at fallon@netcom.ca

Re: UT on polymers
Hi:
Can recommend some articles and experiment setup for
on-line polymer extrusion? It is used for characterization of polymer dispersity, density, viscosity, and etc.
Thank you in advance.

.There are some Universities like Mississippi State University and McMaster University has used ultrasonics for characterisation of polymers using Fallon Ultrasonic System and they had success. I do not have articles but try to refer some papers By Dr. Balakrishnan or Dr. Johari. You need very accurate time measurements and you have to use both shear wave for viscosity and Longitudingal for rest of the requirements. Both change in croslink density, compositional variation etc information has be obtianed.
If you need more information contact me

Regards

Dr. Patel

FMC/TFM

Next generation for Phased Array UT is here now with FMC/TFM! Have higher resolution imaging, impr
...
oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field

SITEX CPSERIES

Teledyne ICM’s CPSERIES has been designed with a view to revolutionizing the handling and perfor

mances of portable X-Ray sets. Despite having managed to halve the weight of similar portable X-Ray generators available on the market (while continuing to provide the same power output), the SITEX CPSERIES generators feature a shutter, a laser pointer, a beryllium window, an aluminum filter and two integrated diaphragms (customized sizes are available upon request). Without compromising the robustness and reliability for which ICM products are renowned, the small size and light weight of the SITEX CPSERIES will radically change the way that you perform your RT inspections. And you will see a positive impact in terms of both quality and return on investment (ROI).
