Most of the activity in the field of ultrasonic testing of polymers involves thickness gaging of molded and extruded products. In the case of extruded tubes and pipes, thickness gaging is often performed in an in-process or on-line mode. In the case of more complex molded parts, it is usually done as an off-line quality control check. It is generally possible to locate unwanted bubbles or voids in polymers, and again this is sometimes done in-process, such as in critical applications like high voltage cable jackets. Finally (and much less commonly implemented), it is possible to analyze material properties of polymers by measuring changes in sound velocity and/or attenuation.

Re: UT on polymers NDE in general is applied to Polymers of many varieties. High and low temperture applications, cure rates, degree of cross-linking, etc. A couple of references might help illustrate the extent of this aplication.

I do not have articles but try to refer some papers By Dr. Balakrishnan or Dr. Johari. You need very accurate time measurements and you have to use both shear wave for viscosity and Longitudingal for rest of the requirements. Both change in croslink density, compositional variation etc information has be obtianed. If you need more information contact me
