Carbon steel boiler inspection

Dear collegues: Can somebody tell me if it is possible to make eddy current inspection on carbon steel tubesd on a boiler or heat exchangers?. If not, what other technics are possible?.

Thank you in advance

I'm not to sure about "ET", but I know that you can get the same or more information from IRIS inspections.

Go to; http://www.iris-inspection.com , this website is an good source of infotmation.

Carbon steel tubes are normally tested with automated UT. NDT auomation manufactures the TUBESCAN system which is the only system that provides automated full CSCAN inspection and data collection. In short, an ID UT probe is rotated and indexed into the tube by a remote feeder. This movement is encoded and the result is a highly detailed CSCAN which will show thining due to corrossion, cracking and pitting. Their web site is www.ndtautomation.com

Re: Carbon steel boiler inspection
Raul,

A very accurate NDT process to inspect carbon steel boiler tubes that has been used by both the US Military, Utilities & Petrochemical industries since 1985 is the "laser" based "LOTIS" technique. This is a very quick process with extremely high resolution and high accuracy results. For futher information please contact me at richardr@qi2.com

Re: Carbon steel boiler inspection
I just want to say that I thought this was a forum to discuss techniques and other problems? Here is someone saying that there is only one Automated UT system that gives a C scan. I just want to clear the air and state that there are many companies that provide/manufacture these Automated UT systems. There will be some that are better than others but that is something this forum could discuss as well.

To answer your question.

If you have acces to the face the defects are on then you can use conventional eddy currents with care.

Otherwise there is ID probe type inspection with Remote Field (Zetec/Russell etc.) or Semi stauration methods (Disley Devices UK, Kontroll Techniques etc.).

Hope this helps.

As noted in the other responses there are several ways to examine CS boiler tubes. If you can supply information on the type of boiler and the defects, if any, that you expect to locate it could narrow down your search.

Remote Field Testing (RFT) is often used in drum to drum applications with the probe inserted internally inot the tube. It is a fairly fast examination and can be done with some scale build up on the tube ID. Boiler tubes are typicaly inspected (by Russell at any rate)using multi-channel flexible probes for increased sensitivity to eccentric defects.

A new type of "RFT" inspection using Low Frequency ET is also available for inspection of water walls in large boilers. This inspection is done from the tube OD. Tubes should be cleaned to removed excess external defects. Gas fired boilers may not require precleaning. Once again multi-channel probes are used for this application.

IRIS is another excellent way of locating defects in boiler tubes. The tubes should be cleaned prior to the inspection and they should also be flooded as water is used a s couplant. the probes are inserted from the steam drum and lowered to the mud drum. IRIS can also be used for near drum inspections from the mud drum. There are several systems for this inspection. For more information see: http://www.panamiris.com/

if you are needing a good place to come and do a boiler inspection you can check out http://www.us.bureauveritas.com/wps/wcm/connect/BV_USNew/local/home/our-services/industrial_manufacturing_compliance/ind_inspection_of_boiler_and_pressure_vessels?Boiler_and_Pressure_Vessel_Inspection. they have some really good inspectors

As a general statement, RFT for fast screening, followed up by IRIS inspection for better sizing and ID/OD discrimination should be the more convenient and appropriate approach, unless thinning or corrosion is the NDT goal.
