Timber Jetty Maximum Load Capacity

Hi all.
We were wondering what tests would need to be carried out in order to calculate the maximum load a timber jetty can take without destroying it. Is there a system where you can take out 1 in every 10 planks and perform tests on them. We have looked at using ultrasonic testing and that seems the go at the moment. But how many planks do you analyize and to what degree? The wooden planks sit on steel girders that run out to the end so deflection won't really work. Has anyone got any ideas? Or can somebody refer me to some books or links that may help.
