Ultrasonic Inspection of Welds in Duplex Steel

The inspection of Duplex steels is challenging.
We have had very good experiences on partially filled welds
in Duplex pipelines using Time Of Flight Diffraction,
where the results were validated against radiography and
destructive testing. Here TOFD was found to have found
all relevant defects as well as being able to size defects.
The same inspection on fully welded specimens proved more
problematic towards the top of the weld, but was still
satisfactory for the purpose. We also have very good results
in high strength steels with a duplex filler material weld.
On duplex forgings however (flanges, nozzles, T-pieces),
TOFD is not possible due to
the large grain sizes. Here we apply mechanised
Pulse Echo meanderscanning techniques and/or PE linescanning.
For nozzles it becomes more involved, because detailed
modelling is necessary before applying ultrasonic techniques,
and to evaluate the results.
For this we have developed software such as CGTOFD (for TOFD)
and MUSE for PE inspections. I will gladly send some more
