In TOFD inspection, is defect detection likely in the area outwith the effective beam width up to the lateral wave. Also when calculating beam widths, what factor should be used i.e. 0.7,1.04 or 1.22?

When choosing a factor for the determination of beam width of a sound beam you must first know what dimensional type of oscillator is being used ( rectangular or disc.) Secondly will you be operating in a pulse echo mode or through transmission (pitch and catch).
Finally what is the beam 'edge' that you want?
Do you want the 'infinite' edge then use the constant 1.22. Or would like to calculate the beam width with a 10% edge (20dB)?
Hope this hasn't muddied the waters too much.
