AWS D17.1 Fillet Welds

Can someone please shed some light on fillet weld size. I am asked to inscribe the largest right triangle in the fillet weld section for welds with uneven legs.I section as perscribed in PWA F-61 and AWS. The sections are interpreted at 50X using a Nikon microscope and numeric reticle. Is'nt this "imagenary" triangle rather subjective depending on the interpreter? What do you measure? Table 6.1 of AWS states the minimum fillet weld size shall not exceed 1.5t when the size is not stated on the drawing. This is for GTAW welder qualification.
