Help! - c-scan test panel

I am currently doing a BEng in mechanical engineering and in my second year have decided to reasearch C-Scan and create a test panel. This reasearch will be continued into my third year therefore it is necessary that I do everything correctly now.

I have no experience at all of NDT or Ultrasonics.

Can any body enlighten me in simple terms what can test panels can do exactly and what is the difference to a-scan and c-scan?

Any other information on these topics would be much appreciated.

Regards
Mark

Re: Help! - c-scan test panel
Hi Mark,
Check out the Krautkramer website go to www.agfandt.com and then click on the Krautkramer Ultrasonics Systems section. The next page you see is all about Ultrasonic testing. At the bottom of the page is a booklet "Introduction to Basic Principles of Ultrasonic Non-destruction Testing". You can download it or they will send you a copy it is about 2.5MB. On the same page you can also get a copy of the Echo 39 magazine on pages 40-43 there are two articles on Cscan presentation and associated equipment. From pages 33-39 there are articles on various Ultrasonic flaw detectors with Ascan presentation.
Hope this sets you off in the right direction for your research.
Regards
Neil Burleigh

In this month's issue you can find a video presentation of C-scan:
www.ndt.net/article/v08n11/passi2/passi2.htm

In the UT Encyclopedia you find description of:
A-scan: www.ndt.net/article/az/ut/asc.htm
C-scan: www.ndt.net/article/az/ut/csc.htm

Mark,
You can find interesting informations about Ultrasonic testing (and other testing methods...) at

http://www.ndt-ed.org/

also you can find informations about C-Scan systems at :

oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
