Corrosion protection of gas pipe line

We have 16 in. Natural gas pipeline, burried and protected cathodically. This is 15 Km long with three overhead crossings on canals. Due to expansion of one of the canal, some portion of the line is now in contact with the canal water.
The line is coated and wrapped with protective tapes for underground applications.

What can be done to ensure protection of the line now in contact with water?

If the existing cathodic protection system is adequate, it should easily protect the portion of pipeline in the water as water is less resistive than soil. However, you might consider installing a permanent reference electrode in this location for occasional measurement.
I believe however that the biggest risk will likely be possible crevice corrosion at the tape to paint interface.
A very diligent visual inspection procedure should be established to insure the exterior of the pipeline remains corrosion free.
Please feel free to email me directly if you have any other questions.

Corrosion protection of gas pipe line
What could be the possible corrosion protection for a burried oil/gas pipeline running 2 miles at 70C? Would the protection be different for highly acidic and highly alkaline soil?

I feel that the previous information is very valuable. I would like to add that the interface tape to paint could be interrupted by abrasive debris which may flow through the canal to the low ends of the pipeilne arches. Perhaps a debris interupter along the canal would be helpful to aleviate this potential problem before it starts. The ph / acidity of the flowing water is essential as an interupter to cathodic annodes. Since you work for a fertilizer company, beware I presume it could be a factor.
