Re: What is PMI
Dear Chris,

PMI stands for Positive Material Identification. It is increasingly being asked for by customers on products leaving factory of the supplier or in case of receipt from warehouses, through traders etc., at the place of receipt before futher processing. There are several methods for carrying out PMI, including Spectrographic analysis, X-ray Fluorescene Analysis etc.

In case of your specific application, a Vacuum Emission Spectrometer or an Argon Flushed Spectrometer should be the right choice since you need to analyse and demonstrate all elements including Carbon, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Chromium, Nickel etc.

There are agencies providing such services so that we don't need to buy the equipment ourselves.

  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
