How to detect insulator cracks

I would like to know the best way to detect cracks in transmission line insulators .
Is this done by thermal imagers ,or ultrasonic probes or what ??

You can detect cracks using the following techniques:
Thermography
Dry-couplat ultrasonics
Coin tape test - for qualitative assessment.

I am more familiar with dry-couplant technique.
