Transducer Wear Face

We have designed a piece of ultrasonic equipment housing numerous (64) ultrasonic compression transducers. This equipment is exposed to a very harsh environment. Recently we have noticed that a lot of the transducer wear faces have been worn off, exposing a silver metallic material. The transducer continues to perform properly, however we are concerned with degradation of the signal quality if the silver metallic material were to become damaged. Could someone recommend a repair method (preferable some type of adhesive) which we can apply to the transducers front face? We have tried various types of epoxy, however this material tends to attenuate the signal below acceptable levels. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you experiment with some metal (stainless steel, etc) wear faces. It may prove to be beneficial in many fronts such as improving coupling efficiency, Excellent wear resistance. You may design it as a detachable attachment (threading mechnism)on regular probe design. You may encounter problems with high thermal conductivity of metals, and I think it can be resolved by experiment and improving design.

The wear face is generally a quarterwave matchplate. This is an attempt to match impedance and provide a constructive interference on the forward moving pulse. I suggest you contact a local probe manufacturer for help selecting the best options which are usually boron silicates. Sigma transducers are located in Washington;

Try three (or maybe four) wear pins located at the extremeties of the array or its holder, with a couplant gap of y/4 (in the couplant). This should eliminate abrasion, allow for minor contour changes, and with sufficient flow will give more consistent coupling.
