ToFD testing

I am the QA Manager of W.E.Smith Hudson, We are Australias leading manufacturer of Pressure vessels and heat transfer equipment.

We wish to upgrade our NDT facility to test weldments more accurately as well as to archive also some time savings.

We need some help in deciding what equipment to buy to preform ToFD testing of welds on vessels which have been internally overlayed with stainless steel.

We would be very interested in methods to examine not only butt welds but one sided weldments too ( ie. nozzle neck to shell welds).

On of the requisites is, that the supplier must be able to provide support in Australia.

We are also interested in the application of phased array testing the equipment.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Wolfgang Graaf

Dear Wolfgang,
You will find several UT-Systems, which are able to perform TOFD. We decided a few month ago to buy a P-Scan UT System. It is easy going and it has the TOFD possibilty. You will find distributors in australia, I think. Further Information about the system you will find at: www.force.dk
They offer a lot of fine scanners as well.
Best regards
Stefan

Re: ToFD testing Wolfgang:
There are a variety of equipment suppliers that can provide you with options. RD Tech has a new unit that has phased array, TOFD and eddy current array capabilities in a single battery-operated portable unit.

But you should keep in mind the Codes you have to work with. Technology is now out-pacing the Codes in that we have managed solutions and improvements (speed and repeatability) but the Codes are often only worded for manual UT. TOFD, even though not so new, is often having difficulties finding acceptance in construction stages due to the Codes not incorporating its use. This situation is changing but just a caution to keep it in mind as not all Codes are there yet.

Your cladding conditions are also a consideration as to the techniques you would select. These may depend on the method of cladding overlay and if you want to find flaws in just the overlay or also in the welds?

Regards
Ed

I have to agree with Ed on this one. The RD Tech system can do what you are looking for.
