Discussed below is an ongoing program to evaluate and test technologies for detecting corrosion on bridge suspension cables. It is an important part of this work to determine state-of-the-art (SOTA) technologies available for monitoring these cables. Our research team has developed a simple survey that you can complete and return and thus indicate your interest in demonstrating your technology on a mock up of a bridge to be completed in late 2005 or 2006. This research program involves the development, integration and deployment of sensing technologies for a corrosion monitoring system for suspension bridge cables; specifically, the monitoring of the internal environment of suspension cables for corrosion activities by direct and indirect sensing methods for detection of corrosion penetration and damage. The project will incorporate controlled laboratory testing, field deployment and demonstration. This system will be a combination of Non-Destructive Evaluation methods (NDE) that provide a continuous external and internal sensing system and current visual inspections for detecting existing conditions along a cable. This work is funded by Federal Highways Administration and is being performed by a team consisting of Columbia University, Physical Acoustics Corporation (PAC), Parsons and Drexel University.
