Online measurement of Layer thickness in coextrusion

Hi All!

I´m a student of Polymer Science in Germany, I´m working on the "Online measurement of Layer thickness in coextrusion", any text material, literature or web link will be of great help...........waiting for your reply....

Best regards,

Qasim.

The IKV in Germany/Aachen has investigated ultrasonic in plastic machine process.

What is your product ? a pipe extrusion or blow mould hollow body? a sheet extrusion?
Do you want to measure in the extrusion die or down in the cooling process?

Re: Online measurement of Layer thickness in coextrusion

Just noticed this source on the Web Site of Panametrics-NDT.

Application Note 930-134:
Thickness Mesurement of Multilayer Plastic Food and Beverage Containers

Application:
Measurement of individual layers and total thickness in multilayer plastic food and beverage containers.

Background:
Many containers for packaged food products and many carbonated beverage bottles contain a gas barrier layer between two layers of structural plastic such as polyvinyl choride, polycarbonate, or polyethylene. The thin barrier layer, which is usually made of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), polyvinylidence choride (PVDC), polyester, acrylic copolymer, or similar material, is designed to preserve freshness and lengthen shelf life by preventing the migration of gas in or out of the package, for example to keep oxygen out of a frozen food package or to keep carbon dioxide inside a beer bottle.

Re: Online measurement of Layer thickness in coextrusion
We are working on both sheet and pipe extrusion, the main thing i need to know is that to measure transparent layers we can use optical means, but what about coloured layers?

pls also advice if you can recommend any text books, as my project is basically literature search and any additional information will be of great help.

Awaiting your reply,

Mit freundlich grüßen.....Qasim
