High temperature couplant requirment

Dear friends,

We required High temperature couplant for Online testing of SAW pipe. We are developed manipulator for weld testing and got testing job. Our manipulator placed after the welding unit and we wants to test the weld area by ultrasonic method.

The test position temperature is around 200 degree and we can not use the cool water.

Please help us and tell us is there any manufacturer of such kind of couplant. Secondly the requirement of couplant (Quantity) is more so we want cost effective solution.

You can get transducers designed for high temp, contact Dr. C. K. Jen at the Industrial Materials Institute of the National Research Council Canada

Re: High temperature couplant requirment
Thanks Mr. Dave
I don’t have the problem with Transducer, that can made by us and we are tacking care of that, the thing is that We can not use the cool water as a couplant cause if cool water used on the hot weld area then might be weld strength characteristics get changed and secondly i want the couplant which can support the testing as well as the proper weld characteristics.
Please suggest us the high temperature couplant and secondly the consumption of the couplant is lot i.e. 1 to 1.5 liter per minutes so cost factor also has to be considered.
Thanking you and warm regards.

Re: High temperature couplant requirement
In these applications you probably want to look at a transducer that does not require couplant such as an EMAT Transducer. This removes the need for couplant and is a much cleaner solution.

Any liquid couplant is going to be messy and pose problems in terms of possible cooling effects on the metallurgy of the weld. You should actually trial couplants andtheir potential quenching effects to see what you can live with. Possible solutions are passing the weld through a bath of couplant, couplant recovery systems etc. If you really need a liquid couplant look at something like peanut oil it has good high temperature stability, good wetting properties and is readily available. Any of the proprietary manufactured couplants is likely to become expensive in your type of application.

The other issue is move the inspection station further down the production line until you can use water without metallurgical problems.

Re: High temperature couplant requirment
The use of UT on SAW (and GMAW) welds at elevated temperature is a common item in pipeline construction off-shore.
There it is normal to quench the surface with fresh water after a radiant cooling has dropped the steel below a critical temperature (this is about 500-600 degrees I think).
After the surface has been dropped below that critical temperature quenching brings the temperature down to about 80-90C so coupling water is not boiled off. At 80-90C AUT, using water through irrigation lines in the probe wedges is applied as the test method. You need only ensure that the plastics in the wedge are held to a constant temperature (about +/-10C from that where you calibrated).
