: Ricardo Rios-Jordana,

: We have to results available on NDTnet for which I copied below more details.

: The first one is an ultrasonic system called upi-50/SW which is manufactured
: by IRT Inc.
: (on NDTnet http://www.ndt.net/IRT or its Homepage http://www.irt.co.il)

: The second reference is an research summary from TWI of our abstract database.

: Our focus on UT/NDT of welding is planed for our April issue. During that
: month we would like to discuss this matter in depth. This month are other themes
: preferable to discuss here, especially is UT/NDT in Civil Engineering the TOPIC NOW.

: But don't hesitate to continue this topic on UT of Spot Weld.
: BTW: I heard that it might be a very difficult task for UT and
: UT companies were not successfully when they tried it years ago.

: Regards

: Rolf Diederichs

: The upi-50/SW Series ultrasonic instrument provides the automotive industry
: with an easy-to-use, reliable means of inspecting and evaluating spot welds
: during production. Developed through continuous cooperation with the automobile
: industry, the upi-50/SW makes use of many of the outstanding features of our
: standard upi-50 ultrasonic instrument and application-oriented hardware and
: software tools.

: Evaluation Of Ultrasonic And Electrical Resistance Methods For The
: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Of Resistance Spot Welds In Low Carbon Steel Sheet
: Author: By S.A. Westgate
: Number: 415

: MANAGEMENT SUMMARY 415/1990
: The work reported covers an extensive study of the non-destructive testing (NDT)
: of resistance spot welds in both laboratory madesamples and production
: components using conventional ultrasonic and electrical resistance measurements.
: Aspects of procedure development have been studied, followed by detailed testing
: of welds in uncoated low carbon steel sheet, with limited tests on zinc coated
: steel. Ultrasonic work included the assessment of various probe types and
: operating frequencies including attenuation studies. Investigation of the
: electrical resistance method covered an assessment of the factors influencing
: the measurements, such as impacting the welds prior to testing, edge distance
: and weld spacing and the distribution of voltage measurements across the weld.

Re: ND Inspection of Resistance Spot Welds
You could look at the use of Acoustic Emission. On line manufacturing monitoring systems for spot welding of thin plate have been in use for many years particularly in the automotive industry. Resistance measurement might have some application as it is now proving very effective for production monitoring of laser welding on automotive car bodies

NEW! The PragmaPro Instrument Platform

The PragmaPro is based on a modular cartridge technology and supports various NDT instrument modal
...
ities such as UT, PAUT, ECT and many more. This new platform is based on a machined, powder-coated aluminum frame for shock-proofness, best sealing qualities and maximum heat dissipation. This is practical to extend the outdoor temperature range and/or to extend the power injected in the transducers. The PragmaPro is aiming at a very wide range of applications, such as weld scanning, corrosion mapping and composite testing.
