01:57 Jan-16-2006 NDT.net Jan 2006: Bad Reichenhall: NDT-CE where and when? and how?
A 30 year old roof of an ice rink collapsed in Bad Reichenhall under the load of snow and buried 50 people. 15 people died, most of them children. Media reports that the weakness was known for several years but insufficient maintenance was done. No regulation of the frequency of monitoring structural health exists in Germany, even not for big public buildings. Now engineers want to establish a regulation as exists for bridges, DIN 1076. The disaster also brings into question the condition of highway and railway bridges, which accordingly to media reports, would be in a critical situation. Because of the importance of the role of NDT in this field we postponed publishing the 3rd MENDT CD to the February issue.
NDT.net would appreciate to receive in the forum opinions related to this disaster. Exist in other countries regulations of Testing? When, where and how? What NDT methods are suitable or currently in research and development?
The Basque Research centre IK4-IDEKO has developed a state-of-the-art ultrasonic inspection system f
or the train wheel. This system secures a sound condition of train wheels and is thus a significant contribution to rail transport safety. The device was delivered to CAF recently and its use allows the manufacturer to become an approved supplier of rolling stock in Italy, as it meets the demanding homologation standards of this country. \\\\r\\\\n
