detection of corrosion under cold insulation

we are looking for the method to detect of corrosion under
cold insulation, including for the pipings of carbon steels
and stainless steels.

Lixi has hand held real time X-Ray to look at the pipe tangent to locate
corrosion. Lixi also has real time density measuring tool to detemine
the total steel in a path through insulation which can locate corrosion.

Re: detection of corrosion under cold insulation
I published a review of methods for this application in the British Institute of NDT Journal Insight for June 1997 pp413-416. Many of the methods have been evaluated for quantitative inspection reliability in the EEC RACH project, now nearing completion:

Re: detection of corrosion under cold insulation
We build field-portable systems to detect corrosion under insulation using x and gamma real-time radioscopy. These systems have been developed and used extensively in Alaska for many years. Our latest versions are carried by wireless intelligent crawlers which can inspect more than 1000 feet of pipeline per day.

I did this in the 80s for C-steel pipe with a surrounding magnetizing coil, and some pick-up coils, It is written up in an issue of "Insight" (or whatever it was called before!), probably 1996. The same method is used for the cross-sectional areas of used drill pipe, and oilfield tubing as it is being pulled from a well.

We have used a number of methods, depending on the problem scope. Our approach is one of reviewing the system to set priorities and use appropriate techniques. The intention is to manage the whole problem rather than simply the detection of corrosion.

The item of equipment you are looking for is known as INCOTEST (Insulated Component Test)
The equipment is manufactured by RTD and is licensed to various companies throughout the word.
Our company, pndt Pty LTD, is based out of Perth Western Australia and we have been operating the INCOTEST constantly over the past 12 months.
The theory is based on pulsed eddy currents and involved the monitoring and timing of eddy currents within a ferro magnetic material.
The equipment is only suitable for ferro magnetic materials so your stainless is still a problem, which will need an alternative approach.
Should you require any further information on INCOTEST please feel free to contact me.

l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
