Re: Recent TOFD Discussion of the NDT Newsgroup
You may wish to read the article from our bulletin
"Inspection Solutions" on the 25 years of history that
TOFD already has. It is on the NDT net under
http://www.ndt.net/article/v04n06/tofd25/tofd25.htm
Other articles on the applicability of TOFD in various
situations such as Pre-Service inspection as a replacement
for radiography, or In Service inspections for specific
applications such as Hydrogen damage, crack growht monitoring
etcetera are available.
Tofd could be used for "jobbing" but it is not as easily
adapted to every situation as manual UT although when applied
properly TOFD will give you much more reliable and
accurate results. We have build up a vast experience in
the use of TOFD in prefabrication on vessels and tanks,
but also on piping, both prefab and installation on site.

A recent presentation held at the Norwegian Society for NDT
outlines the current status of TOFD for Pre- and in service
inspection, discusses advantages and disadvantages compared
to other NDT techniques, training and certification aspects
and introduction into codes and standards. If you wish I
can forward it to you.

FMC/TFM

Next generation for Phased Array UT is here now with FMC/TFM! Have higher resolution imaging, impr
...
oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
