CRDM Housing Leak sends ABB NUCLEAR POWER TEAMS into emergency mobilization
Remote Automated UT Imaging of CRDM Housing IntraSpect(tm) Imaging System Application
An emergency mobilization effort occurred as the result of a leaking, part length Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM) Housing at a US nuclear power plant in February 1998. Armed with standard IntraSpect equipment, the NDE Services group of ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Power was in an excellent position to respond to this emergency need. Working closely with ABB AMDATA, additional efforts were made for this custom application. A standard Model 5010 scanner was modified, a custom track with clamping features was developed, and a calibration sample and mockup were manufactured.
CRDM Housing Inspection Service
The inspection is performed to detect circumferential cracks in the tapered geometry of a part length CRDM Housing. The inspection is performed from the OD surface, imaging the entire circumference of each housing in the taper region.
ARE's inspection is based upon using a 45 degree angle beam from both sides of the taper as detection scans. Once an indication is observed, a sizing scan is then performed using either the 45 degree or an additional transducer, at a tighter scanning grid.
After mobilizing and setting up the system onsite, the inspection begins via a calibration scan on the reference standard/mockup. The clamp/track mechanism with the 5010 scanner attached, is then lowered onto the CRDM Housing. Once in position as determined by the
onboard camera, the clamping mechanism is activated to self center the assembly on the housing. The automated inspection is then performed, creating an easy to understand image of the area in question.
CRDM Housing Inspection Hardware
This inspection is performed based upon the following ABB AMDATA equipment:
* IntraSpect I/UX Bantam(tm) (or I/UX Portable) ultrasonic imaging system
· GA-1002 servo scan controller
· Modified Model 5010 Scanner
· Custom Clamping Track Device
· Cables, cameras, monitor, & cal sample/mockup.
The versatility of an IntraSpect imaging system enables it to be used for a variety of field service inspection applications. Inspecting CRDM Housings is one such application.
Depending upon client needs and resources, ABB AMDATA can either provide the equipment to perform your inspections, or perform the inspection via our field service group.
