Simple yet sophisticated - the new Phoenix motor controller

A unique servomotor controller which offers sophisticated functions from a simple software system has been launched by Phoenix Inspection Systems.

The MCPA (Motor Controller and Power Amplifier) turns a conventional PC into an instrument panel, allowing the operator to take full control of the scanning process through an easy to use Windows-based computer program.

Designed for flexibility, the MCPA can be set up in minutes and used with any scanner and any data acquisition equipment. It allows a wide choice of scan patterns, movement parameters, acceleration and speeds and makes it easy to store your settings.

John Turner, of Phoenix Inspection Systems, said: "The problem with many motor controllers is that the more advanced features they offer, the more difficult they are to use. With the MCPA there is no complicated software package - everything can be controlled from just one window.

"The design ensures smooth, error-free operation and rapid set-up of the scan parameters - often the main hurdle in using a servo-driven system. Everything is designed for ease of use and the program contains an operation log to provide a simple summary of events and to highlight any errors."

The MCPA is compatible with standard Windows systems (Windows 9X, NT or 2000XP) and is connected to the PC by means of RS 232 or USB connection. Based on 19-inch rack system, it can handle 12 and 24 volt motors, up to 4 amps continuous.

As the motor control software can be run on the same PC as data acquisition software, it prevents delays and makes for speedier set-up and scanning. The MCPA also has an emergency stop button plus access for a remote emergency stop.
