Phoenix Inspection Systems, the ultrasonic non-destructive testing specialist, has appointed Dr John Xiaoming Jian as development engineer. At Phoenix he will help to develop new NDT products and technologies.

Born and brought up in Jiangxi province, China, Dr Jian gained a degree in physics at Yangtze University in 1986 and a PhD from the Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing in 1999.

He worked for Yangtze University as a lecturer and the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a research assistant before moving to Singapore in 1999, where he was a research fellow at Nanyang Technological University. He came to England in 2002, holding similar positions at City University, London and most recently in the physics department at Warwick University.

Dr Jian has over 15 years experience in the field of non-destructive testing. His expertise includes transducer design, modelling ultrasonic generation and defect scattering, ultrasonic signal processing and practical NDT applications. He is familiar with NDT modelling software and fluent in a range of programming languages. He has been involved in many practical NDT applications including material characterisation and the inspection of oil wells, solid rockets, integrated circuits, rail track and hot steel billets. He has had numerous papers published in trade and technical magazines and is a regular speaker on the conference circuit.
