|MatriX Technologies presents the XT-2500L x-ray system for inline inspection of medical
Feldkirchen, June 30, 2011 - The MatriX x-ray inspection system XT-2500L was
especially designed for the automatic 100% quality control in medical production.
Main application is the final automatic validation of sterile packaged implants before
delivery. Stryker Corporation leading manufacturer of medical implants and
orthopedic products - introduced and validated this new high speed X-RAY
technology to check their final, sterilized products for product identity and quality.
With the XT2500L the products can be inspected in-line via a newly developed
analysis method for product identification and quality control.
The particular challenge in this inspection is that the test objects such as i.e. bone nails,
screws and wires have no fixed position in the packaging. Therefore, MatriX developed a
special identification algorithm that guarantees the recognition of different product types in
the x-ray image irrespective of their location. To ensure this, several measurement values
are linked so that the respective unique characteristics of each product type can be filtered
out. With this new classification methodology very similar product types with minimal
differences in drilling angles can be successfully classified fully-automatically. Also same
product types made of different materials are verified clearly.
In addition, object-specific and quantitative measurements such as object area, object
length, and object circumference are determined, which can be used for process control.
The rule generation for the classification of specimens can be effected manually as well as
fully automatically via the MatriX proprietary tree classifier software.
The XT-2500L is equipped with a high performance 225kV x-ray tube and a line detector for
long objects with a resolution of 80ìm. The whole XT-2500L inspection process starting
from the loading of the test objects to image acquisition with analysis and good/bad
classification, verification and finally unloading with separation of bad parts runs fully
The spectrum of implants has to cover the complete range of patient specific body shapes
which leads to a respectively high variety of products. As each implant has to run through
many manual process steps during production, the final automatic x-ray inspection avoids a
faulty identification or product mix up with ultimate assurance. The 100% inspection with the
MatriX XT-2500L therefore guarantees a maximum product quality with 100% traceability.
For higher volumes - the XT-2500 features the dual track inspection allowing inspection and
classification of two sterile packages with equal or different content at the same time
providing optimum test performance.
