10th January, 2012 -- Structural Monitoring Systems have the solution to the European Aviation Agency (EASA) order to have all Airbus A380 superjumbo planes checked for wing cracks. The order was made after Engineers detected 36 hairline cracks in an unscheduled internal inspection.|
Structural Monitoring Systems have CVM technology which is tested and proven for in-situ, real time monitoring of metal fatigue and structural faults in a wide range of industries. The CVM systems and sensors can be utilised to detect and monitor damage in metallic and composite structures.
The fluidic sensors are made from radar transparent materials that do not generate electromagnetic or acoustic emissions; they can detect and monitor cracks by direct measurement of pressure changes avoiding the complicated processing of complex sensor outputs currently used in existing inspection techniques.
Toby Chandler Director of Structural Monitoring Systems stated This situation once again reflects that CVM technology is under the radar and would solve the need for these checks through its constant and continual monitoring of any crack development.
CVM Sensors are permanently installed and periodic monitoring of the CVM instrument with a PM200 device will take less than 10 minutes compared with up to 120 hours for an inspection which requires a strip and rebuild.
The implementation of this technology will reduce the cost of mandatory structural integrity maintenance inspections, increase aircraft performance, and provide an increase in the safety of air travel.
