Examples of Very Early Open Access Proceedings
In 1996 I was personally pleased to see the first Website launching an Open
Access NDT Journal (now NDT.net) in the Internet. At this time I was CE0 at
the DGZfP. We started to collaborate with this Website since we recognized
the advantages of the Internet for sharing information, literature for
professionals and communication in general. Although the term "Open
Access" was not formulated at that time, in fact we began to practise it.
While we frequently organised NDT conferences we recognised that Open Access
can play an important role, especially for proceedings. Since it is not a
real business to sell proceedings after the conference, one cannot count on
turnover of them to take part of the conference costs.
For that reason it should not be a problem to give permission for publishing
them OA. We, as NDT Conference organiser and an NDT society, should focus on
serving the needs of the delegates (speakers) to spread their work as wide
Therefore we published, the first time, our annual Conference 2001.
This was followed by the successful proceedings of the WCNDT 2000 in Rome,
both for Open Access designed by NDT.net and published on this server.
Free and open access conference proceedings offers significant social and economic benefits as well as aiding the development of new research.
The NDT society is committed to ensuring promotion of the discipline of NDT
and exchange of knowledge by making information freely accessible.
