Irish Rail approaches TWI to secure bespoke training on visual inspection

TWI Ltd (The Welding Institute)186, Great Abington, Cambridge, United Kingdom

As a well-known and respected industry training provider, TWI was approached by Irish Rail to provide company specific, tailored training in visual inspection for seven of its staff. David Rich, a senior lecturer at TWI, with expertise in non-destructive testing, delivered the training course which was specifically geared towards the rail industry. The course was based on the existing offshore visual inspection training; CSWIP Visual Inspector (Offshore) and CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector - Level 1. It was delivered at the customer’s premises which meant costs could be minimised and staff didn’t need to spend time off-site.

The course offered good value for money, tailored to suit the company’s requirements and using specialist rail axel samples for training and examination. The course also offered ISO 9712 approval. At the end of the visual inspection training programme, candidates gave very positive feedback and all said they had benefitted substantially from the training. They were awarded the CSWIP certification, which provides internationally recognised, role-specific competence assurance for people engaged in welding, joining, materials integrity and inspection in manufacturing, construction, operation or repair of high integrity structures, plant or machinery. CSWIP certification schemes are UKAS-accredited to ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for personnel certification.

Irish Rail provides passenger and freight rail services as well as operating Rosslare Europort. Its recent investment in training is just part a plan for the continued improvements of its rail network and services.

Investment in recent years has delivered major benefits, including:

  • renewed infrastructure, including track, signalling, and other infrastructure
  • new Intercity, Commuter and DART fleet
  • new stations, and upgraded existing stations, including improved accessibility
  • new rail lines, including Cork-Midleton, Ennis-Athenry, Clonsilla-M3 Parkway.
