GPR for Utility Locating - An essential tool in the locator’s toolbox
Underground utility locaters are growing increasingly complex. In addition to metallic utilities, a new generation of non-metallic utilities such as fibre optic cables and PVC piping as well as increased density of buried assets has created a more challenging underground locating situation. Despite growing awareness around safe excavation processes, hundreds of thousands of damages continue to be reported each year across Canada and the U.S. In response to these challenges, utility locators need a broader range of locating methods to effectively meet these challenges.
GPR Activities Generally Focus On:
The Future Is Here
Unlike conventional cable locating devices that require metal pipes and cables to carry electrical current, GPR can detect plastic, asbestos and concrete pipes and structures in addition to metallic ones. Further, target depth can be estimated using a simple calibration that leverages instrument positioning and signal travel time. When outfitted with GPS and feature-tagging data loggers, you can create a locating record as part of the standard locating and marking activity and avoids safety risks, utility damage and other costly mistakes.
