GPR for Utility Locating - An essential tool in the locator’s toolbox

Underground utility locaters are growing increasingly complex. In addition to metallic utilities, a new generation of non-metallic utilities such as fibre optic cables and PVC piping as well as increased density of buried assets has created a more challenging underground locating situation. Despite growing awareness around safe excavation processes, hundreds of thousands of damages continue to be reported each year across Canada and the U.S. In response to these challenges, utility locators need a broader range of locating methods to effectively meet these challenges.

GPR Activities Generally Focus On:

  1. Clearing ( in other words- identifying all subsurface features) an area of unknown underground obstructions before excavating
  2. Verifying as-built records and historical plans to confirm the precise location of known buried infrastructure
  3. Developing detailed maps of underground infrastructure for design purposes. Utility locators now treat GPR (ground penetrating radar) as an essential device to be used along side the traditional EMI (toning) cable and pipe locating devices. GPR uses radio waves to image and locate a wide variety of subsurface features, much like a fish-finder and is particularly effective for detecting non-metallic structures.
