Sonotron NDT expands the applications portfolio for PAUT of welds

The portfolio of the inspection SW packages for the portable ultrasonic phased array (PA) flaw detectors of ISONIC series (ISONIC 3510, ISONIC 2010, ISONIC 2009) has been expanded with the new EXPERT EDGE application related to the testing of open corner and edge joints, which are used in the numerous structures of civil engineering, power generation, and the like. The inspection is performed through the sectorial scan coverage of the weld and heat affected zone with use of shear or compression waves, whichever fit better to the part shape and material properties.


In the common way for all ISONIC PAUT applications:

  • the PA pulser receiver of the instrument is calibrated in the same manner as regular ultrasonic flaw detector
  • the DAC and AGC (Angle Gain Compensation) calibrations are performed independently on each other in a simple and quick way for the required size of reference reflector of the needful type such as SDH, FBH, EDM Notch, etc
  • the shape of the weld to be inspected is entered into the instrument through the simple dialogue; the scan plan is created quickly then through the intuitive routine
  • the coupling between the PA probe and the material is monitored automatically through measuring of the compression wave back wall echo, obtained through implementing of an additional focal law providing emitting and receiving of ultrasonic signal at normal to the scanning surface; simultaneously with weld inspection detection of laminations in the parent material is also possible through implementing of the said additional focal law
  • the true-to-geometry volume overlay imaging of the material is provided along with the live indications for the weld imperfections, coupling loss, and laminations found
  • following the principles of 100% raw data capturing it is provided storage of all focal law A-Scans formed through the superimposing of the primary A-Scans obtained for all elements of the receiving aperture; in addition the storage of the primary A-Scans for all elements of the PA probe is provided was well (FMC protocol) The video below illustrates the cross sectional coverage of the performance demonstration block (PDB), manufactured for the recent project performed by one of the users of ISONIC 3510 instrument:

The whole volume of the weld is inspected through the line scanning (either encoded or time based) with PA probe along the fusion line. The homogeneous sensitivity and true-to-geometry cross-sectional coverage and imaging are provided for every position of the PA probe along with 100% raw data capturing and “on-the-fly” C-Scan imaging.

On completing the scanning the 3D image of the weld and automatically created editable defect list are available immediately. True-to-geometry imaging allows easy distinguishing between the defects indications and geometry echoes. If necessary the TFM image may be provided for every desired cross section of the scanned weld.

EXPERT EDGE application is fully compatible with the VAUT (Video Aided UT) technology.
