IMTEC, a 3M Company, has announced the Iluma Sprite, a low cost, small footprint CT (computed tomography) system designed with a new level of ease of use and scanning speed. The system uses state-of-the art touchscreen technology as its user interface, and a 4-stage rotary system to simplify and ensure successful scanning setup and execution. IMTEC has created a system that it says can be used with minimal training and setup, allowing the user to begin scanning immediately.

Computed tomography started as a medical imaging technique. Digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of an object’s inside structure from a large series of two dimensional x-ray slices. The technique’s name comes from the Greek ‘tomos’ (slice) and ‘graphein’ (to write). It is now in widespread use in aerospace, particularly for looking inside composite structures to check their integrity.
