Working with WetsusApplus RTD 77, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Applus RTD has officially been appointed as a partner, to work with Wetsus (the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology), together with other organizations like community water companies, Vitens, KWR Watercycle Research Institute and the University of Twente, on developments within the field of water inspection and analysis.
With some 100,000 kilometers of drinking water pipes (whose condition is often completely unknown), and between 20 and 25 million pipe joints where faults or wear could lead to pipeline leakages, the challenge was considerable.
Against a theme of Water distribution - fundamental and applied research a number of studies have been carried out. One of these was how to effectively manage and maintain the water supply with the minimum impact on the environment above ground and also on underground services and space. To solve these problems, the joint venture has investigated ideas like the miniaturization of inspection equipment, and developed the IJkpijp. A subsidy has been announced which will now enable this work to be developed further.
