Hamamatsu Photonics released the worlds first monolithic CMOS flat panel sensor in 1999, and has been rapidly increasing its range to offer a wide selection of CMOS flat panel sensors for various digital X-ray imaging applications. Hamamatsus proprietary CMOS silicon process means they can offer the largest monolithic CMOS silicon chips on the market. Added to this, the unique CsI:Ti scintillator crystal, with needle structure, allows the most efficient propagation of the scintillation light to the CMOS detector.
Hamamatsu now offer flat panel sensors consisting of a Megapixel (1056 x 1056 elements) CMOS array, each of 50 micron size, to provide a total x-ray sensitive area of around 3 inches. These products utilise the columnar structure CsI scintillator deposited onto a fibre-optic plate, to provide an effective x-ray shield. The fibre-optic provides both improved image quality (lower x-ray shot noise) and it shields the sensitive CMOS electronics inside the panel, thus giving extended lifetime of 6 million Roentgen guaranteed at 150 KVp.
Compared to previous flat panel sensors, higher frame rates of 9 frames per second at full resolution are achievable and the device is capable of real time imaging at 27 frames per second with 2 x 2 binning. These digital X-ray imaging products are designed for use in pseudo real time, high resolution applications, including industrial radiography, electronic component inspection (such as for BGAs) and 3-D tomographic imaging. Hamamatsu also supplies a range of sealed and open type microfocus x-ray sources for high-resolution x-ray imaging applications.
