Ultrasonic photoelastic system installed at SZMF Duisburg Germany

February 2010 Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung (SZMF) took delivery of the PE-900 photoelastic system from Materials Research Institute. Delivery was made with 3 days of on-site instruction. The SZMF research team quickly adapted to the new tool and verified concepts predicted by modelling.

The photoelastic system has demonstrated to be an effective tool for;
  • Instruction of basic ultrasonic test principles
  • Confirmation of beam model analysis
  • Assessment of beam intensity distributions
  • Explanation of signal origins in simple or complex geometries
  • Validation of modelling
With adaptation of the system to phased-array ultrasonic units the photoelastic system has provided a unique method of seeing the dynamic aspects of sectorial or electronic scanning as well as the dynamic aspects of focusing.

SZMF, MRI and Peak NDT at the Duisburg research facility

During the same week that the PE-900 photoelastic unit was delivered Peak NDT made a demonstration of their Micropulse phased-array instrument. This instrument was successfully demonstrated to be compatible with the photoelastic unit to image the sweep motion of the phased-array beam.
