PAUT: Inspection of complex geometry fracture critical parts – manual probe manipulation

Among the plurality of ultrasonic testing tasks resolved using PA modality there are cases when the manual probe manipulation only is applicable. The proprietary Sonotron NDT’s True-To-Geometry / True-To-Shape Coverage and Imaging technology, which may be utilized whilst performing various strategies of material coverage (sectorial and linear scan, FMC/TFM, etc) has been found the most efficient tool for such inspections providing the maximal speed, highest accuracy, simplicity of implementation and interpretation. The platform for such inspection – portable PA instruments of ISONIC series (ISONIC 3510, ISONIC 2010, ISONIC 2009).

The typical examples are presented by two videos below. The first example relates to the inspection of weld in the train coupler. For that purpose it is utilized the ISONIC EXPERT-A Inspection SW Package for welds between the members having different dimensions, asymmetrical bevel, transit welds, and the like

The second example represents detection of fatigue cracks on the surface for bushing holes in the hardly-to-access metallic lugs of various aircraft. Here it is utilized ISONIC EXPERT CU Inspection SW Package, which was may be applied to the shear and compression wave testing of longitudinal welds (long seams), tube and vessel walls, and the like as well as for short range guided wave (SRUT GW) inspection – circumferential insonicifcation

The examples illustrated by the videos above prove the simplest possible operation and quickest implementation along with the extremely simple interpretation. The reliability of inspection is additionally increased thanks to the real time coupling indication formed by the instrument whilst manipulating PA probe over material’s surface
