Intelligent life confirmed in New York City! With this email Len Andersen (NYC DOT) informed his colleagues about a meeting with Rolf Diederichs (NDT.net) in June 2010. Yes, a really unique circumstance brought Rolf and Len together. Rolf had noticed for awhile Len's forum contributions, especially in respect to advice in the area of NDT in infrastructure. At the time, Rolf had been attending an NDT Conference in Toronto not far from New York, so he decided to meet Len in person to get a more practical insight in NDT of Bridges. From Len's office (Wall Street Area) it was not a far walk to the famous Brooklyn Bridge (see photo).

New York City has many bridges that are benefitting from nondestructive testing. Len's work in the New York City engineering / Construction industry goes back more than twenty years. In New York there are many multi-billion dollar projects using NDT. There are skyscrapers and about ten billion in subway / railway tunnelling in progress. Outside of civil engineering projects, there are pipelines, aircraft maintenance, ship work and manufacturing use of NDT. There was a steam pipe failure in New York that might have been prevented with NDT. Personally, Len inspected a 50 cm (twenty inch) gas pipeline in New York City in accordance with API 1104 with 100 percent X-Ray.

In the past, as an employee of a consultant, Len worked for the Brooklyn Bridge on the covering, the welding work and signing for the work. The Bridge was completed in 1883 and is currently in the process of a half billion USD rehabilitation. It has gotten the full range of NDT. The initial construction was many small steel pieces with rivet and mechanical connectors that use bolt torque testing, etc. The NDT on that famous bridge and several of the other major (>1 mile or 1.6 km) New York City bridges includes visual, X-Rays, UT and structural health monitoring systems.

Being a member of the NDT Forum isn't just good for technical discussions, moreover getting to connect with colleagues in the neighborhood or worldwide is an enjoyable experience.
