The Sonovation Group of Companies has launched a unique high temperature ultrasonic inspection service

TÜV Rheinland Sonovation27, Oosterhout , Netherlands

Recent development work in conjunction with Shell Global Solutions in Amsterdam has shown that ultrasonic inspection is achievable up to 883 degrees Fahrenheit (473 degree Celsius). This work has been done over a 24 month period where validations have been carried out to prove that even using the Time of Flight Diffraction Technique up to such temperatures is feasible. Shell Global Solutions and Sonovation worked closely together to achieve this significant target.

Site work has now been successfully carried out in several refinery sites in Europe and South America where excellent results have been achieved. This work has led to product sales a refinery in Taiwan where Sonovation supplied equipment, scanners and other ancillary equipment with the necessary training.

Group Managing Director, Jan Verkooijen states that: “This clearly shows the commitment by Shell in encouraging such ground breaking technology considering the requirement of refineries to carry out as many maintenance projects as possible with the plant on still on line."

Shell Global Solutions Senior Inspection and Reliability Engineer, Maarten Lorenz also said: “ This service allows Shell’s Refineries and other plants to carry out weld inspection and flaw monitoring under high-temperature plant operating conditions, thus increasing the confidence in our plant with the subsequent increase in plant availability. ”

Sonovation are based in the Netherlands with operations in The UK, Germany, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
