Detection of weld defects on aircraft engines with limited access-non contact mode of NDT

Abstract: ' In aerospace structures, the inspection of welds with limited access puts specific requirement on the NDT-method to be used. A non-contact method that removes the requirement for special surface preparation is both rapid, cost efficient and with the possibility of automation would be much preferred. Infrared thermography is today being used mainly for NDT inspection of composite structures. The technique is based on monitoring the heat conduction of the material of the surface of the structure. The method requires some kind of excitation resulting in a change of heat locally in the inspected area. In this paper, we will discuss the different excitation methods evaluated, such as continuous laser, flash lamp and induction for inspection of welded components. Furthermore, the possibilities for miniaturization and automation of the selected inspection method will be shown. Finally we will show the results of the inspections, carried out in a laboratory, which can easily be transferred to a maintenance workshop.For welds where access is difficult, a miniaturized thermographic technique has been developed and it is suggested that this is a viable method for such inspections.
