Complete PAUT Solution for the In-Service Inspection of Annular Ring Plates in the Above Ground Storage Tanks

Nowadays the inspection of annular rings with use of shear and / or short range guided waves (SRUT GW) generated by the probe placed onto outer chime of the annular ring has been one of the highly demanded services. The complete solution for such service is provided with the use of just one portable phased array (PA) instrument of ISONIC Series, either ISONIC 3510 or ISONIC 2010 or ISONIC 2009 from Sonotron NDT and the appropriate probes and accessories. The solution covers all 3 stages of the service, which are explained below.

1. At the first stage the outside chime of the annular ring should be inspected in order to identify the damaged areas, from which the generation of the shear and short range guided wave towards inner space of the tank is not possible; for that purpose the compression wave B-Scan coverage is provided with the use of linear array probe equipped with detachable delay line:

Once the outer chime areas, which are not suitable for further action have been identified and marked, and the homogeneity and thickness of the rest areas have been confirmed the next stages may be implemented reliably

2. The most efficient solution for the testing of critical zone of the annular ring plate is based on the true-to-geometry multi-skip shear wave coverage implemented with the use of wedged linear array probe and ISONIC A-Ring Inspection SW Application (the critical zone includes the fillet weld area and ~4” (100 mm) next-to-shell part of annular ring inside the tank). In addition to the detection and mapping of the corrosion damages such inspection allows distinguishing between the defects situated at the product and soil side, and the evaluation of their depth and surface dimensions. Thanks to 100% capturing of the primary A-Scans the complimentary TFM imaging may be applied for the defects evaluation as well. Due to relatively narrow size of the annular ring’s outer chime the video encoding of the probe position seems to be the most suitable mean for the data recording. Thanks to Sonotron NDT’s VAUT technology in order to record the UT and video data synchronously it is just necessary to clamp the USB camera onto the surface of the tank shell or annular ring’s outer chime and connect it to the instrument. The preparation of the calibration / performance demonstration block, the data recording in the field and the postprocessing are illustrated comprehensively by the video below:

3. At last the testing of the area between the critical zone and the lap joint ending the annular ring plate is resolved very efficiently with the use of PA modality based SRUT GW technology. Due to very high ultrasonic attenuation characterizing the lined annular ring plates of the tanks in-service the annular ring area may be divided into 2 or more regions of interest (ROI). For each ROI the modes of excitation and receiving of the short range guided wave may be tuned independently through manipulation of the appropriate settings related to the pulsing-receiving using PA probe optimizing the sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The SNR-optimized focal laws related to the corresponding ROIs compose the group, which is implemented by the instrument in one sequence whilst scanning. The integrated map is formed in real time accordingly – the described functionality is provided with the use of ISONIC MULTI-A-SCAN Inspection SW application. Due to relatively narrow size of the annular ring’s outer chime the video encoding of the probe position seems to be the most suitable mean for the data recording. Thanks to Sonotron NDT’s VAUT technology in order to record the UT and video data synchronously it is just necessary to clamp the USB camera onto the surface of the tank shell or annular ring’s outer chime and connect it to the instrument.
