Air-to-Soil Interface: Rapid Screening and Mapping of Corrosion Damages in the Steel Pole Legs beneath the Soil LevelSonotron NDT71, Rehovot, Israel
Short range guided wave ultrasonic testing (SRUT GW) is well accepted by various industries as an effective tool for the screening and mapping of corrosion damages in the hidden areas of metals such as annular rings of above ground storage tanks, tube walls in the pipe support area, and the like. For the said cases the line scanning with the probe is performed above the accessible area of the material along the region of interest.
SRUT GW is also applicable for the rapid screening of the steel pole legs beneath the soil however the narrow size of the scanning area and the poor surface conditions do limit the dimensions of the scanning area extremely. For such case the coverage of the region of interest may be provided mainly through swiveling of the short range guided wave beam.
Due to above noted limitations the mechanical swiveling of SRUT GW probe may be performed just manually the non-mechanical airborne ultrasound based encoding of the probe position and swiveling angle is well applicable. The inspection performed with the use of ISONIC 3505 or ISONIC 3507 smart ultrasonic flaw detector equipped with the airborne ultrasound encoding means powered and controlled through instrument’s USB terminal is demonstrated by the video below – there is less than 2...3 minutes required for the complete coverage of the underground section of the corner profile steel pole leg (2 scanning surfaces) in the air-to-soil interface area
