The Success Story of the IRSX Series Continues

Bad Oldesloe, Germany; June 17, 2019. AT – Automation Technology, innovator in the field of special imaging sensors, has achieved another success with the new IRSX series. Pre-selected by the jury and the inspect editorial team, the smart infrared cameras are taking part in the vote and readers’ poll for the inspect award 2020. In April, the IRSX series was one of the winners at the Vision Systems Design Innovators Awards 2019.

The inspect award finalists are featured in the June issues of the trade magazines inspect and messtec drives Automation as well as on the websites www.inspect-award.de and www.inspect-award.com. From now until October 15, 2019, the readers’ poll on the winners will also be held on these websites. The three candidates with the most votes in each category will receive the inspect award at the sps in Nuremberg, Germany, in November.

Michael Wandelt, Managing Director of AT, said, “We are delighted that our innovative product, which for the first time allows integrators to create application solutions without special software and in principle without programming knowledge in a very short time, has once again been honored. In view of the extensive, very positive feedback from the professional audience and our partners, we are optimistic about the outcome of the inspect award decision. We thank all those who support us in this competition with their vote.”

Stand-Alone Solution for Thermal Machine Vision

With the IRSX series, intelligent, self-contained thermal imaging systems that are consistently designed for industrial use are available for the first time. As an all-in-one solution, the cameras combine a calibrated thermal imaging sensor with a powerful data processing unit and a variety of industrial interfaces in a small, rugged IP67 housing. A computer, special thermal imaging software, or external interfaces are no longer required. This considerably reduces system complexity, installation effort, and costs while significantly improving system stability.

The IRSX cameras are uncooled infrared cameras based on microbolometer detectors. They are available with different microbolometer designs and for different wavelength ranges. The internal temperature sensors and calibration procedures of the cameras as well as the possibility to connect external temperature sensors to compensate for environmental influences ensure a precise temperature measurement.

Practice-Tailored Camera Versions

AT offers a suitable IRSX camera version for every application. The compact version, a comfortable “plug-and-play” solution, is designed for WFOV lenses whereas the versatile universal version can be combined with almost any of AT’s lenses. There is also an open version without housing for customer-specific configurations that can be fitted with a housing by the customer, but for which AT also keeps housings at hand.

The Suitable Lens and Accessories for Every Need

In addition to the different camera versions, AT provides a wide range of WFOV, interchangeable, zoom, and microscope lenses that covers the entire spectrum of thermographic applications. These are all lenses with a large aperture that guarantee a high radiation yield and exploitation of the sensor sensitivity and thus precise thermal images. Customer-specific focal lengths, e.g. large ones for monitoring distant objects, are available on request.

Of course, AT also offers an extensive selection of accessories so that customers can deal with any application requirement – from a compact I/O panel for an easy system integration of the IRSX cameras to GigE cables in different versions for reliable Ethernet communication between the cameras and connected hardware to a sun shield.

A Variety of Interfaces and Protocols

The IRSX camera platform is based on Gigabit Ethernet with GigE Vision and GeniCam so that even larger sensor networks can be built with standard network components. The provided standard protocols Modbus TCP (Master and Slave), Profinet, OPC-UA, and MQTT enable direct control of hardware components such as digital IOs, direct access to the evaluation data as well as direct connection to the PLC and industrial visualization systems.

Web-Based Configuration and Visualization

Via the web-based configuration interface, the IRSX cameras can be set up for thermal monitoring tasks in no time at all without programming knowledge. The REST-API, implemented according to the OpenAPI Standard, makes it easy to adapt the visualization for customer-specific applications. Users can create their “own website” or import the data supplied by the cameras into an existing website.

Apps for Maximum Efficiency and Ease of Use

Thanks to AT’s application package concept, the IRSX cameras help users maximize their process efficiency while being as easy to use as a smartphone. The core of the package are AT’s standard smart apps, the IRSX GigE Vision App, the IRSX Smart Processing App, and the IRSX Factory Automation App. In addition, AT offers out-of-the-box apps for specific applications, e.g. substation monitoring, plastic welding or electronic component inspection, as well as the development of apps in cooperation with partners and OEMs. With the Lua scripting integrated in the standard smart apps, complete customer-specific evaluation scenarios can be put into practice. As the IRSX platform supports third party embedded vision packages such as Halcon, CVB, or EVT, existing solutions can be integrated into the IRSX apps.

All this makes the IRSX cameras the first truly smart infrared cameras for industrial use and creates excellent conditions for the practical implementation of Industry 4.0. Wherever temperature has a decisive influence in the manufacture and processing of products, the IRSX cameras provide a highly flexible solution for autonomous thermal monitoring. A further application focus is preventive early fire detection and plant condition monitoring. Once set up, the cameras automatically detect temperature anomalies and trigger an alarm long before a fire breaks out or a system fails.
