In-Service Inspection of the Deck Plates of Metallic Bridges for Cracking above Skewed FilletsSonotron NDT73, Rehovot, Israel
Parallel Use of True-to-Geometry S-Scan and FMC/TFM Coverage and Imaging
In the metallic bridges the deck plate typically rests on the U-shape ribs, which are one-side-welded to its bottom surface forming the skewed fillets. During service life the fatigue cracks may occur in the deck plate above the fillet welds and they should be detected and repaired on-time in order to prevent the probable accident. The said cracks may be detected ultrasonically just through scanning of the deck with the probe coupled to the bottom surface of the deck plate as the top side is covered by wearing layer.
The present video demonstrates the principles of PAUT detection and recording of such imperfections.
The inspection which may be implemented using portable PA instruments of ISONIC series such as ISONIC 3510, ISONIC 2010, and ISONIC 2009 from Sonotron NDT equipped with EXPERT FILLET and MULTIGROUP T SW applications, suitable linear array probe, and encoded scanning frame. Implementing complimentary True-to-Geometry S-Scan and FMC/TFM coverage and live imaging simultaneously significantly improves the probability of detection providing the ability of immediate quick interpretation of recorded and displayed data, which is presented in the format, which is well acceptable by non-UT-Pros, such as maintenance technicians and managers.
