TOFD Principle, Limitations, Calibration and Inspection

Abstract: Time of flight diffraction (TOFD) is a common ultrasonic method used with automated ultrasonic systems (AUT). This method can detect, locate and accurately size flaws, but it also has limitations. Principally among them is that the dead zone masks inspection in the near-surface just below the weld cap. This paper recommends reflectors be placed appropriately in calibration blocks so that limitations are correctly identified, quantified, and the method is applied reliably.
