Advanced Photonix Gets New Terahertz Contracts

Ann Arbor-based Advanced Photonix Inc. (NYSE Alternext US: API) announced Friday that its subsidiary, Picometrix LLC, has received two new terahertz (THz) contracts from the Air Force totaling $850,000.

The largest contract is a $750,000 Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer contract for development of a higher power terahertz transmitter for surface and gas spectroscopy applications that could be used with the T-Ray 4000 system.

There's also a $100,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research contract is for development of semiconductor material capable of increasing terahertz power.

If successful, the Phase II contract will extend the T-Ray 4000 bandwidth from 4 terahertz to more than five terahertz and significantly increase the power in these higher frequencies. The increased bandwidth will expand the market for the T-Ray 4000 to include surface and gas spectroscopy analytical applications.

The Phase I contract is a feasibility study to further develop the company's proprietary III-V semiconductors in order to increase the THz generating power across all frequencies tenfold. If successful, increased THz power could significantly expand applications for non-destructive testing markets.

Terahertz radiation occupies a part of the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and infrared light. Little understood and hard to generate before the 1990s, T-rays are now being studied for inspection, medical testing and security applications. The rays penetrate a few centimeters into many materials -- including fabrics and the human body -- without damaging materials and tissues in the manner of higher-energy radiation like X-rays.
