Linde offers to license ultrasonic cylinder retesting technologyLinde North America Inc., Murray Hill, NJ, USA
Murray Hill & New Providence, New Jersey, U.S., June 23, 2010 Linde North America is offering to license its advanced ultrasonic examination (UE) technology for the retesting of gas cylinders. The technology is a highly effective replacement for hydrostatic testing methodology, and licensing is available to medical, specialty and industrial gas distributors, as well as hydrostatic retest companies.

Lindes ultrasonic cylinder retesting technology is superior to the traditional hydrostatic (water) method, said John ONeil, manager ultrasonic testing and failure analysis for Linde North America. Weve been using this technology at our plant in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina, and other locations for the past 15 years. Now were offering it for license to interested distributors and hydrostatic retesting vendors to give them access to the most advanced method of retesting cylinders available, ONeil said.
UE is an advancement over hydrostatic testing which requires removal of the cylinder valve and the introduction of water into the cylinder which then requires a tedious cleaning process before placing the cylinder back into service. With ultrasonic testing there is no need to remove the valve. UE is a completely external testing method using ultrasonic waves to see the inside of the cylinder to detect flaws. This is particularly critical with specialty and medical gas cylinders which require pristine interiors, ONeil said.
At RTP, in addition to testing its own cylinders, Linde tests industrial size steel and aluminum cylinders for large distributors and other gas suppliers in the Southeast, as well as for customers across a range of industries. Linde also uses small bench top units for testing small diameter medical gas cylinders and has added bench top units to LifeGas locations in Albany, New York, Indianapolis, Indiana, Dallas, Texas and Union City, Georgia.
The Department of Transportation (DOT), which regulates cylinder retesting processes, has granted Linde approval to extend the re-qualification period of aluminum cylinders from the normal five years to 10 years under a special permit. This special permit allows aluminum cylinders to remain in service twice as long and may be transferred to distributors licensing Lindes technology, ONeil said.
