Need a test block made from a real "un-obtainium?" PH Tool can help! We never shy away from special or challenging designs, and we offer far more than the industry standard, "steel, stainless, and aluminum" lineup. If you love the design of one of our standard blocks, but wish it was made in a different alloy or maybe from a drop of your own material, let us know!

Designs like the 5-Step Block shown above are in stock in over 50 different alloys! If we haven't made it yet, our fully-capable CNC and EDM machining departments offer us the ability to make special alloy test blocks in a matter of weeks or even days, rather than months. We're happy to set up and run a custom batch for you; large or small.

Why Special Alloys?

As a test block manufacturer, we are often asked, "Why do you make your blocks in so many different materials?" The answer is obvious to a trained NDT technician, but is not necessarily common knowledge to those who are not directly involved in testing.

The most accurate calibration results, regardless of testing method, are obtained when the actual test conditions can be replicated as closely as possible. Using a calibration block of the same or very similar material to the component under test is one of the best ways to ensure accurate results. For ultrasonic testing (UT,) this is due to the different acoustic velocity of materials (sound waves travel through different materials at different speeds.) For eddy current testing (ET,) it is important to use a calibration block of the same or very close electrical conductivity. Magnetic particle testing (MT) standards, obviously, must be made from ferromagnetic materials. Radiographic testing (RT) standards must be made from materials of the same or similar density as the component under test, and so on for all of the various NDT disciplines.
